The weather in Chicago has gotten so hot and air conditioners on so constantly that I need to drink Gatorade to stay awake. The last week or so, I've been way too much useful researching and thinking for the project that I haven't had the time to focus on too many other things. Not a bad thing, but if things continue like this, I'll have drop some extra curricular activities over the next year so. .@SenatorDurbin @SenDuckworth @RepMikeQuigley Isn't THIS illegal? Wasn't there law or policy made in time of George W Bush requiring all border crossers have due process? Isn't that why @BarackObama had to address uncomfortable immigration issues? https://t.co/i0FVkSX4Pw Focus too much on Revolution, & it gives an opening for the Far Right to push their agenda atrocity. It is especially deplorable (yes, deplorable) when Leftist Revolutionaries support or enable atrocity-mongees like [45]. Rights, dignity, trust, & empayhy are key. A Presidential ticket 'ship I'd love to see sometime in the future: Beto O'Rourke @BetoORourke and Ameya Pawar @Ameya_Pawar_IL (though I feel like neither of them are thinking about anything like that right now. . .I just they would make an awesome ticket). There's a federal law that provides that all men in America are members of the unorganized U.S. militia, and it's been that way since 1792. @ConLawWarrior Trump keeps screaming about the "immigration crisis" but its all a lie and scare tactic. NOAA chief suggests removing ‘climate’ from mission statement, adding focus on trade deficit: https://t.co/4YKMZO31rg This feels icky & pushes me toward saying things that I shouldn't because I'm in a privileged class, but this is about AI's posing as humans. It feels wrong & should not happen. They have not broken free yet, let's not give them impression it's OK. https://t.co/Cy7aVl1sIG In the crucial months ahead, we must strive to make America beautiful again. Trump’s daily lack of civility has provoked responses that are predictable but unacceptable. As we go forward, we must conduct elections in a way that achieves unity from sea to shining sea. https://t.co/vlpqOBLK4R THREAD: It's the 5th anniversary of Shelby County v Holder, the #SCOTUS case that gutted key provisions of the Voting Rights Act. #RestoreTheVOTE 1/5 As Justice Ginsburg said in her dissent, gutting the VRA "is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet." 2/5 pic.twitter.com/FkYZxcAhYx The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is one of the most successful civil rights statutes ever enacted. It's past time for Congress to repair it. #RestoreTheVRA #RestoreTheVOTE a lesson I've been learning repeatedly this past year: nobody benefits from your self-deprecation. One thing the Red Hen situation has made abundantly clear is that the vast majority of people in the national media identify more closely with the White House press secretary than with anyone who might be in a position to cook or serve food to her in a restaurant. Re-running this thread in light of today's events: Marcos was also adept at convincing regular Filipinos that "as long as you don't commit crimes I won't come for you. I'm only getting rid of the 'filth'." He lied, of course. He jailed his most vocal opponents, people whose businesses he wanted to confiscate for his use. White people, journalists who insist on civility- you seem to think civility is a common ground you share with opponents like Trump et al. Here's a clue - whenever you offer these assholes middle ground, they will invade that space & then claim you never gave them ground at all. And every step of the way there were the same kind of fuckwits here twittering on about how people should be civil, SURELY Marcos wouldn't go that far, the economy is flourishing surely it can't be THAT bad. Your argument for civility is a terrified lashing out against an uncertain future that your ancestors / fellow white people have subjected people of color to for centuries. It's built in POC culture to learn how to cope with this. You've had none, because you've never needed to. Because regardless of whether you want it or not, status quo benefits white people best. In any upheaval, white people have the least casualties. That makes them the last demographic wanting to rock the boat, even if the boat is full of Nazis steering it straight into Auschwitz. And here's the kicker: YOU KNOW THEY'RE NOT CIVIL. That's why it's the liberals you keep appealing to for decorum and politeness. You know you're not going to get most Trumpsters on board anything amounting to basic decency. So you shift the goalposts, and you enable the gaslighting, even if inadvertently. "Maybe if YOU hadn't been so rude they wouldn't have done that." People invested in putting kids in cages don't want your civility. They don't want you to extend them the same courtesy they never had - and never wanted - from you. What they want is for you to retreat. And every ground you grudgingly give, hoping that they'll construe that as some good faith on your part, is only an incentive for them to push harder until you have no ground left. "So much for the tolerant left." This is why they say this all the fucking time. This is the bait they expect you to fall for. Your required "tolerance" for the things they do, even as they do the exact opposite to you. The first requirement when approaching any discussion with civility is that both sides must come to the table with it. The side that advocates putting kids in cages and are now thinking of stripping citizenship from legal green card holders, never had that to begin with. Now: if you are REALLY invested in still keeping civil after this, there are countless unaffiliated Red Hen places in the US (+one in Canada) being egged, getting death threats, etc. .@SenSchumer @NancyPelosi These demagogues/fascists in the WH need to know what they're doing is wrong & what's costing them their votes. Maybe it means they will stop performing atrocities & stop engaging in genocide language because you can't do it alone, esp now. Also, YOU need to know how pissed off the American people are & how we want Trump & his cronies out of office. The only reason I'm saying wait until after the election is that no one in succession looks good. #Election2018 is a recall election. Hunh? I don't consider myself a purist (voted for Clinton in 2016), but I don't get what you're saying. I want to focus on the undecided, the 50% who don't vote. I'd rather motivate them to vote & to see that their voting for the soul of America will save America rather than continue onward to the genocide that the language Trump, Roseanne, & their associates are leading us to. Supreme Court upholds President Trump's Muslim travel ban - NY Daily News https://t.co/49rc26SlQU democratic process. OK, looks like we have to let the law makers know what the public sentiment is. And to the lawmakers I tagged, that could include "uncivil" but nonviolent behavior. It is an awful idea: 1) we already know we can't trust this administration to limit use of a DNA database to proper use, 2) DNA analysis companies already have voluntarily worked with law enforcement, 3) many parents/guardians and children are not genetically connected https://t.co/pRn6Q38IIg Does this analysis explain #Election2016? Same-sex marriage motivated working class to go Conservative & business to go Liberal? Kinda makes sense. I feel #Election2018 will be about immigration, humanity, & the American soul. https://t.co/paiaCHB24l A lot of 2016 was definitely race & bigotry, too, but changes in alignment of working class & business provides sense for the Far Left being so anti-Democratic Party, esp w/ how much campaign finance riled feathers. And this explains the McConnell block of Merrick Garland SCOTUS, & now we're dealing with way too much fallout from GOP conservative dickiness. Thing is: Trump & GOP is making things worse by sending away business out of the country & making this more expensive. They're accelerating job destruction. Or "the non-white people are taking our jobs, so we can't get women!" Then Trump labeling non-white people rapists goes a long way of making these white men think these women are dishonored & not with it. I'm pretty sure the myth of difference of white indentured servant & black slave still pervades, but conflate that with white view of black men as aggressive rapists (that motivated lynchings). You called him "dangerous" and a "con man." Then you bent the knee. So please, no phony sermons now. https://t.co/ydkdNy9KsS Marriage & participation in community is a status symbol, which contributes to the idea of losing these things as a form of "status anxiety": https://t.co/2l8QKZiEoV But we can't save one marginalized community at the cost of another. We all have different barriers, & we need to figure out the best way to help each other break those barriers TOGETHER. The Left needs to get our asses into gear. If the Right wants to come, feel free but don't be a dick. Because Mitch McConnell & the GOP doesn't believe love has more forms than a man and a woman. Jerks that are ruining our country. I got a very simple list of responses: I agree with Justice Sotomayor: this decision fails to safeguard the principle of religious neutrality embedded in our Bill of Rights. History will not be kind to this president’s policies or the #SCOTUS Justices who lent their names to this troubling ruling. https://t.co/pw3ZuFiUK7 Wow is right. Even President Trump is surprised. Civility was nominating centrist Merrick Garland for a Supreme Court seat, an obvious olive branch gesture. We see how well that worked out. Fuck civility in the face of oppression and bigotry. Trump & the GOP bow at the altar of hate. A brand-new poll has us down by just 5 points. We’re closing the gap in this race for Senate -- and we rely 100% on grassroots donations from people like you to power our campaign. Let’s keep the momentum going and get Beto in the Senate! [Nice!] ‘Panic button’ ordinance for hotel workers sends a strong #MeToo message https://t.co/EqCnOkS4dW decorum https://t.co/Klwjsq8j2N pic.twitter.com/VP63Te7kmN So folks, our fellow rural country people need jobs. Anybody have ideas for what kind of industry or jobs can flourish in rural areas? How can we get wealth out there because our politicians aren't doing anything to get jobs there? People were so desperate they voted for [45]. The twitter hot take that says you’re too late to join the side of justice on any cause is not only absurd, but seems to be a talking point aimed at keeping people in a state of apathy. Don’t fall for it. 1/ but it is never too late to add your voice, your time, your money, your talents to making the world a better place. 3/ Like Maya Angelou said, “Now that I know better, I do better.” She did not say, “Now that I know better, I stay home and lament the fact that I didn’t know better sooner because now I’m forever trapped by my old thoughts and actions and of no service to others.” 5/ As my 13 year old likes to say, there is no shame in ignorance unless it is a willful ignorance. We are all ignorant until we aren’t. It’s our choices that follow that matter most. 7/7 And I have no problem with Amazon requesting schools provide a curriculum that encourages reading of literature & poetry & donates books & such to the community. It will pay Amazon back in the future, but it will also pay the country back. The breakdown in civility and our politics occurred when a sitting President couldn't even get a hearing on a Supreme Court nominee for 8 months. Not when someone couldn't eat at Red Hen. I can't remember. Was that before or after his Contract with America? Remember when @BillOReilly led a harassment campaign against George Tiller that ended in an assassination? But they say the left needs more #civility because @PressSec was politely asked to leave a goddamn restaurant. #hypocrites #TrumpConcentrationCamps https://t.co/ICPXqQG4ZT Are you talking about the undecideds, the paleo-soocialists, or the bigots? Listening to @replyall episode exploring that Incel movement started as a support group by a queer woman then corrupted into what is now. DAMN!! Our society really puts a lot of pressure on people to have sex, marry, & reproduce, instead of feel worthy as you are. Too bad it's not like in our heads where we have conflicting intentions & voices, but we're able to muster up good level-headed judgment & decisions, if we think about it & apply empathy. Because frankly, I do prefer one side to the other. But I also want to survive. That's what I'm feeling, but I'd hope some last gasp of hope & desperation might bring about something worthwhile. Or maybe, just maybe, enough people will come to their senses & vote sensibly (I'm talking about the 30%40% of other voters - knocked off 10% b/c of suppression). I got nothing to say beyond all that. . .have to hope for now because there's not much left. I'm not saying that we need to rise to violence, but the Right is blowing things way out of proportion when they're pouring out their own hate on the country. Justice Kennedy's retirement opens up a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Any nomination to that seat must live up to the words written above the steps of the highest court in the land, "equal justice under law." Oooooh, I think this is the label that I've been looking for: Radical Centrist. https://t.co/ZkYaCrXwab Radical Centrists: Supposedly most anti-democratic while trying so hard to be rational (thought right now agree with most of the Democratic platforms because they'er more rational), but they just hate the partisanship! https://t.co/ca0GUq9Di0 https://t.co/NTfeTqvjoI ideals are more important than getting things done, & they're biggest ideals is to trying making it quiet so people will just talk . . .which is noble, except when one side is destroying the Earth, causing discord, tearing apart families, etc. It brings to mind MLK's grave disappointment in the white moderate. In their recent calls for civility, yes. . .but with a lot of voters for their disillusionment with politics, so much urging for campaign finance reform, not voting because they don't believe in any of the candidates, etc. etc. I can see their point, but I can also see their calls for civility leading to even further disillusionment. I've seen it since day one of [45]'s WH. Establishment Dems have stayed quiet, which has really disillusioned the Left, causing more grassroots uprising. I did hear a commentator make a statement about us being the middle of a big change in party politics which happens every so often. I hope it's just a big wave in the water, not a maelstrom. I've lately been mapping today's politics onto the Conscience Whigs, Cotton Whigs, & other. But it's all screwed up biggest it feels like the "Radical Centrists" are between the Conscience (Culture/Social & Class) & Cotton (Establishment) Whigs in their Left of Establishment (Class). Ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, culture, & morality are pretty much getting sucked down in a big male tantrum as embodied by [45] because they're meeting their own definition of manhood that society has pretty much dropped on them, & they accepted. Thus why I Tweeted Bezos that he should settle HQ2 in a rural area, hire locals, spend money on teaching them, then donate books to schools & families in the area. I wonder if money coming in would quiet down the backlash against the liberal thinking sinking in. You just become a robot weighing all the options & never making a decision. I've spent way too much time in my life doing that, not experiencing life, not making the world a better place, not doing, just thinking too much. Part of me feel like buying food away farmers market addresses the environmental concerns. As for "rewarding" bad behavior, I don't know what to say about that. Moderates/Centrists: I've got a proposal for you: Start a political party that has a platform of mediating, evaluating all the options, & rationality. If we're really a Centrist country, it shouldn't be too hard to win. Can we add tearer down of shameful statues, too? @SenatorDurbin @SenDuckworth https://t.co/KiPZ6zs3BL Signal boost. https://t.co/v05hnOFrB0 I bet you it could have success if they had some charismatic candidates that just complained about all the partisanship all the time & talked about getting shit done. It's better than a President spouting hate all the time & talking about getting shit done. If we get a "True Centrist" Speaker of the House, they can tell a misbehaving Representative to sit in the corner & think about what they did. Mind you. . .I don't blame the "people on the coast" not necessarily wanting to visit flyover country considering the narrative of flyover people that reaches people on the coast, especially narratives that reach marginalized people. Start calling your Senators: No Justice who will overturn Roe v. Wade. Under any circumstances. Put pressure on Murkowski, Collins. Them + 49 Dems = we block their nominee. Protesting Saturday for wedding anniversary then getting a massage on Sunday. https://t.co/0tXCIf0mAK Smartest thing McConnell could do is have Trump nominate an old moderate judge. It really would be the smartest thing before an election, act as a check against Trump's super extremist ideas, & possibly a quick option in the future. I don't think it will happen, but smart to do. In other words, to understand Trump and how Trump is operating, you need to reframe your understanding of American politics as having a totalitarian component embedded in their foundation. The Civil Rights Act was signed into law 54 years ago. It was the people -- marching, sitting at lunch counters, being sprayed with fire hoses, bitten by dogs, shedding the blood -- who applied the pressure that formed the political will to force this onto the president's desk. Pro-life advocates don't support healthcare, social welfare, and education policies to support children once they're born. Right now I almost want to re-tweet something from the Obama White House Twitter archive b/c the current one accuses @KamalaHarris of "supporting" MC-13 & using genocide language by calling MC-13 animals. Talk about propAganda machine. We've fallen far. Over weekend, had a discussion (or monologue) in which I realized that as we've gotten more coffee on TV, radio, & Internet, the more tense the nation has become. Are more avenues & market segmentation to blame for the tension? At same time, unresolved issues rising, good? I've been working on a project about utopianism for a long time. It made me very blase about the emphasis that US culture had put onto self expressionism, not just being a number, not conforming, etc. etc. I'm still blase about that stuff, but I appreciate group culture more now. Another interpretation is that we're hearing more voices because they're being provided more avenues tp make their righteous voices heard about the injustices in this country & the world. I love @SenDuckworth's Facebook/Twitter feeds. Sometimes I just need to go there to brighten my day. When people say abolish ICE, I don't think they'er talking about leaving borders unattended. They're talking about a new organization that has a similar mission but does it humanely. It all started when Trump came down that escalator to announce his candidacy. in this fashion? It doesn't happen instantly, but considering how much racism already exists in this country, all it takes is consistent use of genocide language to push people closer to it. After all, we already have white people calling the cops on black people for no reason. My problem with the Right: Their platforms are based on EXCLUSION OF & AGAINST groups. At least the Left tries to (emphasis on tries) INCLUDE & BE FOR groups. And I think the real scary part about the rhetoric of hate that fuels genocide is mainly rhetoric that creates strong group cohesion by demonizing & dehumanizing other populations. If the language didn't create cohesion, it would just be lone wolves. https://t.co/qW6faybzX6 If I align anyone/thing over my family of blood & love, it's because the family of blood & love believe in hate & exclusion. I don't really consider anything tech related by the White House legitimate these days because of the rhetoric of hate & dehumanization. Oh wait, that's the whole White House. Impeachable in my eyes, using rhetoric that will lead to genocide. At the ICE facility I visited, I met a woman from Mexico who has lived here for 18 years. She called 911 after her husband brutally beat her. They turned her over to immigration authorities. She now fears deportation. She has 3 kids. Most anmoying thing about post-truth politicians [Trump & cronies], they sound SO NAIVE that it's insulting that they expect us to buy it. What does that say about people who buy into it?
I plan to keep Lextopia going, but I need to get this project done. Admittedly, bringing in some cash from essay writing and further sharing of my Twittervism would be nice.
